Rules for Living

There is so much to love and appreciate about life.

But what are the things, that make it all worthwhile? That keep us fulfilled? That cause us to look back, when the life we know is coming to a close, and feel at peace?

In an earlier submission by Day Program Manager, Bonnie Ross, she outlined the five most common regrets of the dying:

  • I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
  • I wish I didn’t work so hard.
  • I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
  • I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
  • I wish that I had let myself be happier.

So considering these points, it would be fair to say that a worthwhile life would consist of:

  • Staying true to oneself, and letting go of others’ expectations
  • Working less
  • Authentically expressing feelings and emotions
  • Keeping in contact with friends
  • Allowing and Welcoming happiness

WOW! Read these over again… Reflect on them. Recognize how you feel within when considering what these five points would be offering you. It’s liberating!

It really is up to you to create a life worth living each day, and in each moment make choices that will benefit your highest good and provide you with a sense of fulfilment. Perhaps these messages from His Holiness, the Dalai Lama will inspire you also:
